If you own a rental property in Alpharetta or you’re thinking about listing your home on Airbnb or VRBO, there’s an important new regulation you need to know about.

The City of Alpharetta has officially rolled out a short-term rental ordinance that went into effect in January 2025. If you rent out your property for fewer than 30 consecutive days, you are now required to register your property through the city’s short-term rental permitting process. Yep, that’s a bit of a mouthful, but it’s essential.

Here’s what this means in plain English:

· You’ll need to submit an application through the City of Alpharetta’s website

· There is an annual permit fee, along with a business license fee

· Agree to certain rules and regulations as part of the permitting process.

These new requirements are part of a growing trend across cities nationwide, as municipalities look to balance tourism, neighborhood quality of life, and property use. Alpharetta is simply following suit, and now, local homeowners need to be aware and stay compliant.

If all of this sounds confusing, don’t worry. The application process is fairly straightforward once you know where to look. The City of Alpharetta has a dedicated section on its website that walks you through it step by step.
